Kōlam, which means ‘beauty’, is an ancient folk art, hand drawn at the threshold of homes in South India to usher in good fortune. Composed of rice flour, lines and curved loops are drawn around an underlying grid of dots. Bringing together the systematic and intuitive, mathematical and organic, kōlam forms the basis of our design approach.

Symmetry is of key importance to the kōlam artist, as it denotes universal balance or the Hindu aspect of ‘Shiva-Shakti’. While we preserve the rules of symmetry in individual forms, it is the bold breaking of symmetry in the overall composition that allows us to create exciting and dynamic designs that are richly layered in a nuanced color palette.

Kōlam has an ephemeral quality that is made permanent with each hand woven knot, through the weaving process. Both crafts, with the lyrical, rhythmic movement of the hand share a meditative quality in their making.
